The airline and the National Transportation Safety Board said they were investigating what had happened to Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 while it was flying to Ontario, California.

The Port of Portland said an emergency landing was made at the international airport on Friday, but did not name the airline. Few other details were immediately available.

Alaska Airlines Flight 1282, a Boeing 737-9 MAX, took off for Ontario International Airport at 5:07 p.m., according to Flight reported, a flight tracking website. Six minutes later it was diverted back to Portland.

The plane reached a maximum altitude of about 16,000 feet and landed in Portland at 5:27 p.m., FlightAware data showed.
