Blue Jays’ Anthony Bass apologizes after sharing ‘hurtful’ video endorsing Target and Bud Light boycotts

toronto blue jays Pitcher Anthony Bass apologized Tuesday after sharing a video on social media supporting the Target and Bud Light boycotts, saying his actions were “detrimental to the Pride community.”

Bass met with the media before Tuesday’s game against the milwaukee brewers and acknowledged the backlash he faced after posting a video of a creator calling on Christians to boycott companies over recent controversies surrounding their LGBTQ promotions.

The 35-year-old reliever didn’t take any questions.

“I’ll make this quick,” Bass began. “I acknowledge yesterday that I made a post that was hurtful to the Pride community, which includes my close friends and family, and I am very sorry for that.

“I just spoke with my teammates and shared my actions with them yesterday. I apologized to them and as of now, I am using Blue Jays resources to better educate myself and make better decisions moving forward.”

“The stadium is for everyone. We include all the fans in the stadium and we want to welcome everyone. That’s all I have to say.”

The video Bass shared to his Instagram Stories was from a creator named Ryan Miller, who called on Christians to join boycotts after the retail giant faced massive backlash this month over its Pride Month collection, which followed Bud Light Association with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney in March.

The Blue Jays issued a statement ahead of Bass’s comments stating that “an individual player’s sentiments are not representative of the club’s beliefs.”

“The Blue Jays bring together millions of fans across Canada and are committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming experience for all,” the statement continued.

“The Blue Jays are proud to celebrate LGBTQ2S+ Pride Month, which includes a special fourth annual Pride Weekend at the ballpark on June 9 and 10, and alliance demonstrations throughout the month around the stadium.”

The video did not appear on Bass’s Instagram page until Tuesday afternoon.
