Catalonia asks the Government for 100 million to welcome young migrants

he Minister of Social Rights, Carles Campuzano, has requested this Thursday from the central government of the United Nations aid fund for the reception of young migrants which could amount to about 100 million euros. Campuzano has also suggested to the Executive that it study the creation of a universal benefit for families with children and has defended the need for a finalist tax to finance dependency.

Campuzano has brought these ideas to the Minister of Youth and Children, Sira Regoand of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030, Pablo Bustinduy, during the meetings he held with both of them in Madrid.

Both ministries have influence in areas of exclusive Catalan competence, as the Minister explained to the media after the meetings, in statements in which he recorded that he has requested maximum respect for the Government’s sphere of competence.

Campuzano has pointed out that “Catalonia is supporting a reception of important young migrants, more than two thousand minors in 2023.” “We are a destination territory, because they have not entered through the port of Barcelona or El Prat, they come from other territories of the State,” he added.

To take on these arrivals, he pointed out, it is necessary to create a state fund that allows for the support of these people. “Considering some over 18 years of age, there are 6,000 young migrants welcomed in Catalonia,” argued the councilor, who has estimated that the fund for Catalonia could require around 100 million euros.

In addition to this demand, Campuzano has also raised with Minister Rego the possibility of creating a universal child-rearing benefit, and recalled that two states such as Italy and Poland have also established it, with very positive results in the second, where child poverty has been reduced. “The minister has shown a good welcome to both questions,” she said.

A press release from the Ministry of Youth and Children reported this morning that “Rego and Campuzano have discussed issues such as the situation of unaccompanied girls, boys and adolescents, the need to develop public policy tools to combat child poverty or the importance of providing a multidisciplinary and inter-institutional response to minor victims of violence”.

On the other hand, the councilor has told Minister Bustinduy that the system that provides financial support to the dependency law has failed and has led to the autonomies being the ones that are bearing the cost, more than 80% in the Catalan case, something that is not sustainable. “Spain needs a finalist tax to sustain the dependency system; France has it, Germany has it.” The minister has agreed to create a working group to study an issue that will be key throughout this year, as Campuzano has predicted.
