freeridge is one of the first major comedy releases on Netflix of 2023, but it won’t be back for more, having been canceled a couple of months after its initial debut. Here’s why Netflix canceled freeridge and what we would have expected from any future season.
Serving as a spin-off for on my block, freeridge it shares the exact location as the mothership series, but notably features an entirely new cast. The show follows four teenagers who work to reverse a curse after a peculiar old box appears to bring misfortune. The show takes place in September after season 4 of on my block ending in May.
Until now, freeridge has collected good reviews from critics with an 86% on RottenTomatoes, with The Daily Beast praising him as a “female-led comedy”. At the same time, the hollywood reporter concluded freeridge is a “lighter show than its predecessor”, but he said it “shares the same empathetic heart” and “playful sense of humour”.
Audience response to the show has been mixed so far, with just 5.7 on IMDb and 75% on RT.

Our renewal prediction: probable cancellation
Things were not looking very good for freeridge From the beginning. Based on the initial stats (more on that below), it was hard to see how the show survives on metrics alone, and metrics were ultimately the death blow.
Variety reported for the first time the cancellation on April 12, 2023, although he did not provide additional context about his cancellation.
We’ve covered before how Netflix decides to renew or cancel its lineup of shows which looks at many metrics including (but not limited to) completion rates, headlines, and title cost.
Series co-creator Jeremy Haft was optimistic about the future of the show while speaking to TVLine, saying:
“The world of Freeridge is very rich and vibrant, and there are tons of stories to tell. We have always had a small grain of hope: [co-creator] Lauren Jüngerich, [executive producer] Jamie Dooner Eddie [Gonzalez] and me, I always hoped that we would continue the Freeridge stories. Thankfully, and with a lot of gratitude, we thank Netflix for allowing us to continue telling those stories. More to come.”

how well he did freeridge act on netflix?
Freeridge’s The debut was one of the worst Netflix original series debuts we’ve seen in quite some time, with just 8.27 million hours watched between January 29 and February 5, 2023.

freeridge did not appear in the top 10 for week 2, achieving no more than 10.2 million hours which would have surpassed new amsterdam season 4 that week.
Since the program has a shorter execution time, could that be part of the problem?
Well, based on CVE (Complete Views Equivalent: Divide Netflix’s advertised hours watched by the series’ runtime) viewership data, the show had a very weak debut.

So not a good start in the global top 10 per hour, but how well is the show doing in individual regions?
Flix Patrol measures the top 10 dailies in nearly 90 countries around the world, and so far they don’t paint a pretty picture either.
According to their data, only 13 countries have seen freeridge appear in the top 10, and in many of those countries, it only appeared for a single day. As the charts below show, the show only became the 15th most popular show on Netflix, and its best performance has been in the United States, South Africa, and some of the Caribbean islands.
By day 8, the show had completely dropped out of all of Netflix’s top 10.

Finally, we will see the external statistics of the series.
Often referred to as “demand”, televisionstats.com claims that the show peaked online as the 36th largest show in the world on February 3, 2023, but has since declined dramatically. Not even ranking in the top 100 shows just a few weeks after launch. Its data sources are information from Wikipedia, IMDb, Google Trends, Reddit and more.

One thing we need to mention is the reviews of the show. We have seen many reviews on the net criticizing the show for not being sufficiently related to on my block and the spin-off’s inability to capture the magic of the original series. At the time of cancellation, its IMDb score was 5.7 out of 10 with only just over 800 reviews.
The end of freeridge Did season 1 set up a season 2?
Actually on my block fashion, freeridge It ends with a big cliffhanger. The series concludes with episode 8, where the gang discovers that the curse they have been suffering from comes from Abuelita’s long-lost sister, Mariluna.
Mariluna gives the gang the task of spending a certain amount of money in a fixed period of time with nothing to show for it; then they would walk away with even more money.
While they accepted the challenge, things took a turn for the worse when Mariluna was shot. The two Santos gang shooters accidentally mistook Mariluna for Marisol while looking for the Roller World money that Marisol and Jamal found in on my block before his death.
The series concludes with the taking of Mariluna and the credits rolling.
