Hage Geingob, president of Namibia, has died at the age of 82

President Hage G. Geingob of Namibia, who took office in 2015 and was previously the country’s first prime minister after independence, died early Sunday. He was 82 years old.

the presidential office announced his death in a social media statement attributed to Vice President Nangolo Mbumba, now acting president.

Geingob, who had been receiving treatment for cancer, died at a hospital in the capital, Windhoek, shortly after midnight, the statement said.

He was Namibia’s first prime minister from 1990, the year the country gained independence from South Africa, until 2002. He served again 10 years later, before being elected president.
