One of Netflix’s first big TV releases of 2023 is lockwood and company, a new supernatural teen series from the UK. The show certainly sets up a second season, but will it have one? Here’s what we know and how well the program is performing so far.

Developed by Joe Cornish, the new British series (compared to a “teenager Ghostbusters“) is an 8-episode series that follows the first two books in the novel series by Jonathan Stroud.

Reviews of the show from critics since its release have been strong.

Based on 11 reviews (Netflix did not provide advanced filters to our knowledge), the series has a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes94% audience on RT, and 7.5 on IMDb.

Our renewal prediction: sloped cancellation

More than three weeks after the release of lockwood and company on Netflix, it is not known if the series will return.

As we’ve discussed before, things like completion rate, number of starters, and cost all play a role in renewals.

In the case of lockwood and companyWe currently predict that the series is likely to tip towards cancellation given its performance compared to other titles in the genre and a massive drop in viewership from weeks 2-3.

We should note that, particularly over the past year, Netflix has struggled to revamp genre shows that skew the younger crowd. Last year, we saw the cancellation of the likes of First murder, resident Evil, the imperfect, the midnight club, and The bastard son and the devil himself all failed to go beyond season 1, while warrior nun I couldn’t get a third season.

Joe Cornish tackles season 2 in a interview with Tamera Jones from Collider. When asked about the possibilities for Season 2 and social engagement as a contributing factor to the renewal, Cornish said:

“…I’m not going to get caught up in everything, “Will/Won’t there be a Season 2?” We go crazy. We just have to be super proud of what we’ve done. We really appreciate the fact, particularly, that fans of the book recognize the world that was in their imagination on screen. I just want to be proud and happy for the actors, for all the amazing technicians, everyone who worked on the show that made it good and that so many people like it.”

The big question is, will this trend continue in 2023 with lockwood and company?

that’s good lockwood and company acting on netflix?

We can see how well lockwood and company act on Netflix through multiple sources.

Showrunner Joe Cornish himself said that they had a meeting with Netflix in which they were told that they “did very well for the first few weeks”, but later said that he would not attend any more meetings.

first let’s start with hourly data from Netflix itself. Every Tuesday, across four categories, Netflix publishes 40 figures per hour on its top-performing titles.

lockwood and company collected 79.91 million hours in the global top 10 over the course of three weeks (January 22 to February 12) and dropped in week 4.

Here’s how it breaks down week by week:

week periodHours seen (M)RangeWeek in the Top 10
January 22, 2023 to January 29, 202325,120,00061
January 29, 2023 to February 5, 202339,420,000 (+57%)12
February 5, 2023 to February 12, 202315,370,000 (-61%)73

As mentioned, the show dropped out of the top 10 in week 4, meaning it did not exceed 15.12 million hours that week.

Let’s compare its opening week to several other shows in the same genre that premiered in 2022 (and, in particular, didn’t meet Season 2 orders).

As you can see, the show followed trajectories similar to the imperfect and First murder (both cancelled) but fell below file 81 (also cancelled).

Those are top 10 raw figures per hour, but let’s try to put it on a level playing field with similar shows in the same genre as lockwood.

Using CVE (taking hours watched and then dividing by total show duration), we can see that the show got off to a stronger start than two other British series, such as stopshearts (which was renewed for two seasons) and mean bad.

However, according to our top 10 reports, lockwood he was still on the low end for English-language series debuts, and generally stated, “with just 4.4 million CVEs in its first three days, that’s really on the low end for a new English-language series.” .

What to expect from Lockwood & Co season 2 on Netflix

Since the series seems to adapt the books in order, logic dictates that we would see one, two, or even three book entries adapted for season 2.

For those unfamiliar, that would mean we’d probably see the hollow boy I the creeping shadow adapted, leaving the empty tomb for a future season.

Assuming Season 2 heads straight into the third book, here’s a brief plot summary of The Hollow child courtesy of GoodReads:

“As a massive outbreak of supernatural visitors mystifies Scotland Yard and sparks protests across London, Lockwood & Co. continues to prove their worth in exterminating spirits. Anthony Lockwood is handsome, George insightful and Lucy dynamic, while the Skull in the Jar delivers wry advice from the sidelines. There’s a new spirit of openness in the team now that Lockwood has shared some of his childhood secrets, and Lucy feels more and more like her real home is on Portland Row. So it comes as quite a surprise when Lockwood and George introduce him to Holly Munro, an annoyingly cheerful and hyper-efficient new assistant.

As digital spy notes, some of the general questions of the second season would be how exactly Lockwood’s parents died, as it is slowly revealed throughout the season that there is more to that story than meets the eye.

That brings us to the cliffhanger that ends with the bedroom door otherwise having been closed all season opening only for the credits to start rolling.

When asked what’s behind the door, Ruby Stokes told Variety:

“I haven’t heard of any theory, but I’ve seen people, even some who have read the books, say they want to leave it up to interpretation. I also haven’t read the theories because even as I was reading the books, like going from Book One to Book Two, I enjoyed that moment of not knowing what’s next.”

A Redditor has already predicted what might be in the locked room, suggesting that it might be “The ghosts of his parents” or “More relics that have to do with his family”.

Teasing Season 2 in the aforementioned Collider article, Joe Cornish told them about the future books (and thus the series):

“Character relationships become more complex, world-building expands, [there are] twists and turns, and turns into epic and jaw-dropping settings. So, we’d love the opportunity to put all of that on the screen, but at the same time, we’re very proud of the first season. If you want to know what’s beyond that door and you can’t wait any longer, then it’s in the books.”
