The Stranger Things universe is expanding, with Netflix today announcing a new animated spin-off set in the world of one of Netflix’s biggest shows.
The Duffer Brothers, on behalf of Upside Down Pictures, are involved as executive producers on the new untitled animated series along with Shawn Levi and Dan Cohen on behalf of 21 Vueltas.
In a statement about the new project, the duffer brothers saying:
“We have always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons we grew up loving, and seeing this dream come true has been absolutely thrilling. We couldn’t be more impressed with what Eric Robles and his team have created – the scripts and illustrations are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you! The adventure continues…”
Netflix first announced spin-offs alongside the Season 5 renewal last year. Since then, there’s been a lot of speculation about what’s to come, including plenty of rumors surrounding an Eleven spin-off.
speaking in the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Matt Duffer said the spinoff would be “1,000% different” from the original, adding that it would be a “story that connects to the world of Stranger Things, but it’s really more about how we’re telling that story.” ”
Who is the animated studio behind the new Stranger Things animated series?
Recent Flying Bark Productions Projects
the animation studio Flying Bark Productions is behind the new series, with offices in Syndey and Los Angeles, and was founded 55 years ago in 1967.
Flying Bark’s previous television credits include:
- The Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
- failure technologies
- And if…? from Marvel.
- Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur
- cute boy
Film projects the studio has worked on include:
- Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie (2022)
- 100% Wolf
- blinky bill the movie
- Maya the Bee Movie
Eric Robles will spearhead the project for Netflix. The well-known writer and entertainer is best known for being the creator of Nickelodeon’s fanboy and chum chum, as well as co-creator of the Nickelodeon/Netflix Original series glitch Technologies, which lasted two seasons.
Robles will also serve as an executive producer on the project.
It is this Stranger Things: Tokyo?
What is currently unclear is whether the recently announced animated series is the same animated title that we found out about in late 2022.
We had heard that the project was referred to as an anime at the time, and since we had no plot information, it’s unclear if the two are separate projects or not.
As a reminder, here’s what we heard about the plot of the project, which we learned would be a six-hour series:
“An encounter with the Upside Down turns into a grand adventure for video game-loving twin brothers living on the outskirts of Tokyo in the 1980s.”
Of course, a lot is happening elsewhere to Strange things right now.
Season 5, the final season of the mothership series, will go into production in the summer and is expected to premiere in 2024 at the earliest. However, we are getting some Strange things goodness this year through a new virtual reality game developed by Tender Claws with the goal of launching in winter 2023.
That’s all besides the Strange things play, titled Stranger Things: The First Shadowhitting theaters in London in late 2023 through 2024 with tickets on sale now.
