Netflix has released its first teaser for its upcoming drama series about the Fukushima disaster called The days. We hear that the series will launch globally in June 2023.

First announced in September 2022. The series is comparable to the innovative limited series on HBO and Sky. Chernobyl which has quickly become one of the most famous limited series of all time. If The Days is half as good as Chernobyl, Netflix subscribers are in for a treat.

Warner Bros Film and Lyonesse are behind the Netflix production, with Nakata Hideo and Nishiura Masaki sharing directing duties.

Netflix released a sneak peek (exclusively on the Netflix Japan YouTube channel) on February 16, 2023. Unfortunately, the sneak peek is only available in Japanese on YouTube, although you can find a subtitled trailer embedded on Netflix page for the show (you can also set a reminder there).

When is The days Netflix release date?

Through the official Netflix channels, it has only been confirmed that The Days will be released sometime in 2023. However, we hear that the project is currently slated for a June 1, 2023 global release date.

Until Netflix officially confirms, all release dates are subject to change.

What is the plot of The Days?

the synopsis of The days is the following:

It depicts the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident that occurred in 2011 over a period of 7 days. From the three perspectives of government, corporate organizations and those who risk their lives. What really happened on that day and in that place will be addressed.

What is the Fukushima nuclear disaster?

The Fukushima nuclear disaster was a nuclear accident that took place in Ōkuma, Fukushima, Japan on March 11, 2011. The event was caused by the Tōhoku earthquake and its resulting tsunami.

On the afternoon of March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck Japan, with its epicenter just 45 miles east of the coast of the Tōhoku region. The earthquake triggered an extremely powerful tsunami, with recorded waves of up to 14 meters hitting the Japanese coast.

These 14-meter waves tore over the man-made defenses to protect the power plant, causing a devastating amount of damage in the process. The flooding of units 1-4 in the lower parts of the reactor buildings caused not only a loss of power, but also the failure of the emergency generators. Thanks to the loss of power, the pumps used to cool the reactor cores stopped working.

As the reactors were unable to cool down, three nuclear meltdowns occurred, with three hydrogen explosions and surprisingly large amounts of radioactive contamination released in three of the four units.

The radiation that was released into the atmosphere forced the Japanese government to increase the evacuation area to a 12-mile radius. Not to mention, there was an unprecedented amount of radioactive isotopes being released into the Pacific Ocean, which in the long term will have a massive and devastating impact on the world’s largest ocean.

Could the disaster have been prevented?

If the correct measures had been taken, there was definitely a chance that the damage from the disaster would have been reduced.

Key factors such as the height of the power plants above sea level played a huge role in the disaster. At only 10 meters above sea level, the 14-meter tsunami waves easily passed over the defenses; however, in 1967, when it was first built, the original plan would have called for the plant to be 30 meters above sea level. The height reduction was the result of TEPCO leveling the sea coast to facilitate the entry of the equipment to build the plant.

Over the years, concern about earthquakes was raised several times, notably after the Reactor 1 backup generator flooded in 1991 and the tsunamis of 2000 and 2008.

We cannot definitively say with certainty that the disaster will have been averted, but if concerns had been taken more seriously and stronger measures implemented, at least the damage caused by tsunamis could have been reduced.

Who are the cast members of The Days?

None of the following cast members have been assigned named roles, however we can confirm their involvement in the series.

Yakusho Koji has been cast in the lead role. He has yet to star in a lead role for Netflix, but he is most famous for his work in the NHK Japanese drama Tokugawa Ieyasu in the role of Oda Nobunaga.

Takenouchi Yutaka has been cast in a supporting role. He has yet to star in a Netflix Original, but some may recognize him from his role as Akasaka Hideki in Shin Godzilla.

Kohinata Fumiyo has also been confirmed for a supporting role, but like her co-star, she has yet to star in a Netflix original movie or drama.
