‘Outer Banks’ Season 4: Production Halted, Netflix Release Date Estimate, and What We Know So Far

First debuting on Netflix in April 2020, external banks is the ensemble teen drama that follows a group of Pogue teens who have been searching for treasure over the course of the past three seasons.

Season 3 of the show debuted on Netflix globally on February 23, 2023.

The series received a renewal a week before the new season arrived and was produced as part of a live event Netflix hosted called “Poguelandia: An Outer Banks Experience” that took place on February 18. The live concert saw the cast announce the fourth season and performances from the likes of Khalid, Lil Baby, alt-J, and Elley Duhé.

Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke were also confirmed to continue in their respective roles as co-creators, showrunners, and executive producers on season 4.

In a statement delivered to the press during the event, they said:

“Seeing Poguelandia come to life was nothing short of spectacular. The Pogues are having the adventure of a lifetime, and now we can chart more twists and turns as the ride continues in Outer Banks season four. Thanks to Netflix, our cast and the amazing fans who helped make this happen.”

Netflix cited strong performance in its renewal notes, saying: “The hit series was ranked #1 globally on Netflix’s Top 10 English-language TV shows list for the 4 weeks following the release of Season 2. on July 30, 2021 and in the Top 10 for 6 weeks. ; it reached the Top 10 in 74 countries.”

Advance early renewals like this are rare, and are often reserved for Netflix’s biggest shows that can count on a successful run when a new season hits the service. Compare that to most programs that need to hit certain metrics (unknown to the general public) within a defined period of time to justify a renewal.

Other Netflix shows that have gotten early renewals on Netflix include Strange things, virgin riverand Bridgerton.

Netflix stated in its renewal that “Season 4 details and additional information will be shared at a later time.”

Through some sources (including Netflix itself), we can see how well external banks season 3 is acting.

Let’s start with the hourly figures reported by Netflix every Tuesday. So far, we can see that the show had a strong opening week, growing massive in Season 2, but showing a steeper decline in Weeks 2 and 3. Why is this? As we reported in early March 2023, Netflix had scheduled production dates for external banks to start at the end of May 2023.

According to a production list of weekly production, external banks season 4 was scheduled to begin filming on May 30, 2023and then run most of 2023 with a estimated completion date of December 15, 2023. Other rumors about the start of filming were posted by gossip account Deux Moi who stated: “Production starts at the end of May. They will be in South Carolina until the end of the year.”

An updated report from ProductionWeekly indicated that the filming start date was pushed back to June 12, 2023, with that still to finish December 15, 2023.

CBS17 confirmed that filming would begin on June 12, with various extras cast during that week. On June 12, numerous eyewitnesses learned that filming had begun in Charleston, South Carolina.

Based on past trends and these new production dates, we could expect 15-18 months. that place external banksThe fourth season will premiere on Netflix sometime between May and August 2024.

We had just over a month of filming before the show was halted due to the SAG-AFTRA strike which began on July 14, 2023. For the first time in more than 60 years, the WGA and SAG-AFRTA (writers and actors) are on strike to get better pay, benefits and other key issues resolved. Most of the actors on the show will be represented by SAG-AFTRA, and the show itself is subject to the New Media Netflix Agreement.

By 7 WSPA Newsthe casting agency behind the show (Kimmie Stewart Casting) issued a notice on July 14 that stated:

“Effective now we have suspended filming.
We will keep everyone updated as we receive information.”

Filming will resume once the strike is lifted.

what to expect from external banks season 4 on Netflix

Warning: spoilers ahead.

What can we expect in terms of the story of the fourth season? There’s a lot to cover, given the cliffhanger at the end of Season 3.

As a quick reminder, in episode 10, The Pogue’s search for El Dorado came to an end and they closed in on the treasure deep in the jungle with John B and Sarah facing their toughest challenges and losses.

The loss, of course, was the two main deaths at the end of season 3 in the form of Big John and Ward dying while fighting Carlos Singh and his men.

Fast-forward to the end of a few scenes, and we see an 18-month time jump that ultimately ends the season on a happy note and setting up the next adventure.

In the final scenes, a mysterious older man approaches The Pogues with a job offer. Although initially skeptical, he reveals that he is in possession of a 1718 manuscript containing information about the notorious pirate captain Edward Teach, also known as “Blackbeard”. He seeks partners to help him investigate the document, which includes precise details of Teach’s travels and the location of his ship.

Expect the unexpected is the beat the creators have said in numerous interviews following the release of Outer Banks. Josh Pate said season 4 is “not going to be your usual Blackbeard story,” for example.

Of course, the cast and crew of the show have teased what we might see in the upcoming season. One absurd interview even led showrunners to tease that the show could take the lead. Fast and Furious the franchise route is heading into space.

Could there be a season 5 of external banks on netflix?

Almost sure.

In the early days of the show, the creators told various outlets that they had originally planned for the show to run for four or five seasons.

In February 2023, they told EW that those plans are no longer in effect, and instead plan to keep the show running for as long as possible.

Josh Pate said entertainment weekly, “I don’t know if I could put a real number on it right now; The time it takes to get to that ending could be expanded, but now we know the shape of the story’s ending. We’ll hold out for as long as we can, for sure.”
