The physicians from across the public health system of Catalonia will go to hit the January 25 and 26. It was not enough that the “conseller” of Health, Manel Balcells, announced two weeks ago in Parliament a billion more than the budgets of his department. Nor that he promised to allocate to the primary, “in two or three years”, the 25% of Salvation’s total funds, as recommended by WHO. Doctors want facts, not promises, and so unless agreed before, on January 25 and 26 will be the “beginning” of one “uninterrupted cycle of mobilizations” to protest against “disaffection” toilets (aggravated by the covid-19 pandemic) and the “zero capacity to catch and hold back the new generations optionals”.

He announced it this Monday noon Metges of Catalonia (MC), the labor union who calls this strike to which some are called 25,000 family physicians and hospitals throughout the territory, both from the Catalan Health Institute (ICS) and from the subsidized system. In other words, all those who work in the Integral Health System for Public Use (Siscat), in the public system. 10 years ago that Catalonia did not call a strike of this caliber, since the one that took place in 2018 only concerned primary care doctors. The union is mainly asking to plan the 9,000 retirements years to come and improvement in compensation to help attract talent.

“The public health system has very serious shortcomings which have been accentuated by the pandemic. And now, post-pandemic, we don’t see anything happening to recover the necessary levels”, says the general secretary of MC, Xavier Leonard. Lleonart hopes the strike will be massively followed, Well, “people are rushing more and more” for the union to summon him. “There is a lot of discomfort and the toilets are badly burned There are those who tell us that We should have called sooner.”

Since health departmentThey assured that they were looking for an agreement and that there was “sufficient time” to avoid the strike. In this sense, the deputy director of the Catalan Health Service, Alfred Garcia, thanked the professionals for the margin of two months until January to allow “to conclude agreements and to give rise to peaks in demand at a difficult time like Christmas”. “It’s an exercise in responsibility,” Garcia assessed, saying he “fully understands” the doctors’ claims.

The Madrid thing “makes you want to”

The strike drums had been ringing for weeks in the health of Catalonia. The massive mobilizations in Madrid have finished pushing the Catalan doctors, who have spent years accusing a great care overload (especially in primary care) and bad work conditions. Another big concern about the next retirement batch baby boomers who cannot be covered because there are no doctors. The latter also occurs in other European countries, like France and Germany, but many Spanish doctors go to work there because conditions are better.

“We have enough reasons go on strike without looking at anyone else. But seeing that there are compañeros from other communities who are mobilizing makes me want to do it more.” emphasizes Lleonart, who also specifies that January 25 and 26 “will be the first days” strike, why not, not to arrive before an agreement with the Ministry of Health, could be lengthened “We will plan and meet in a function if there is more or less sensitivity speak Management”, recalls the general secretary of MC.

requests

MC ensures that all complaints what formula is a “rescue helicopter” to ensure the survival of the system. One of the most serious problems is the lack of health professionals. Some will retire in Catalonia 9,000 in the next few years. “The replacement of this generation of doctors will not be possible if working conditions and remuneration are not improved”, ensures the union. “It is not true that there are no professionals. There are no professionals who want to work with the conditions overload, contempt and precariousness that are offered in the public health system,” he adds. Catalonia is, according to this union, the community with more requests for certificates of aptitude (1,163 in 2021) to work abroad.
