Russia launched the Progress MS-26 cargo spacecraft this Thursday heading to the International Space Station (ISS) with a shipment of fuel, water, food and equipment for the crew of the orbital platform.
The Soyuz-2.1a carrier rocket with Progress was launched at 06:25 Moscow time (03:25 GMT) from the Russian Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, according to the live broadcast of the Russian space agency, Roscosmos. The docking of the Progress MS-26 with the Zvezdá module of the Russian segment of the ISS is scheduled for 06:12 GMT next Saturday.
The ship carries 2,518 kilograms of cargo in its holds, which include 580 kilograms of fuel, 420 liters of water and 40 kilograms of liquid nitrogen. In addition, it transports 1,478 kilograms of equipment and tools.as well as various materials necessary for scientific experiments, clothing, food and hygiene items for the crew.
The space freighter will be received by Russian cosmonauts Konstantin Borisov, Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub, who share the ISS with American astronauts Jasmin Moghbeli and Lorah O’Hara, Norwegian Andreas Mogensen and Japanese Satoshi Furukawa.
The Progress MS were created on the basis of the Soviet Soyuz manned ships by the Energuia space company, in order to transport loads to orbital stations and also serve to correct their orbits using their thrusters.
