A cayuco arrives with 125 migrants in El Hierro after eight days adrift

Maritime Rescue has rescued this Sundayor 125 people who traveled in a canoe to the island of El Hierro from Dakar (Senegal). According to what they have told the emergency services, the migrants lThey spent eight days adrift on the high seas with the fragile boat. None of the occupants, the majority Senegalese and Malian, have needed to be transferred to a hospital.

At 6:40 in the morning (Canary time), the boat Salvamar Adhara has headed to the southern coast of El Hierro, in the municipality of La Restinga, after a notice from the Maritime Rescue control center and the Civil Guard indicating that a possible boat had been detected south of El Hierro 24 kilometers from the coast. The rescue boat located them an hour later, and accompanied them to the port of La Restinga.

The migrants interacted with the rescue teams that They left the port of Dakar eight days ago. Senegalese and some people from Mali were traveling on the boat, according to information from sources in the health and emergency services.

The occupants of this canoe have been transferred to the Temporary Reception Center for Foreigners (CATE), in the town of San Andrés, in the municipality of Valverde, where they will remain in police custody until its referral to other resources outside the island.
