Welcome to your weekly roundup of the biggest stories from Netflix’s top 10 hourly figures for the week ending July 9, 2023.
Every Tuesday, Netflix updates its Top 10 Stats page with 40 new figures per hour for the top movies and shows from the past seven days. If you want to easily browse the top 10 hourly data, visit our tool.
Note: In this report of Netflix hours watched from July 3, 2023 to July 9, 2023, we will use “Full View Equivalent” or CVE, expressed in millions. That’s the same metric Netflix now uses in its Top 10 after the June 2023 methodology update. It allows for better comparisons between movies and series, but it’s not an audience metric. It is the minimum number of viewings if they were all complete from the first second to the last of the movie or season.

1. the outlaws It’s a B-level movie.
Looking at all the opening weekends of Netflix movies in 2023, a clear typology of movies emerges.
First up are the top-tier movies opening with 42.8-42.9 million CVEs for the first three days (think murder mystery 2, Mother, Extraction 2).
Then you have the A-tier list less than around 27-28M CVE (Your people, your place or mine) followed by the B-tier list of movies opening with 19 million CVEs.
Finally, you have family movies (usually with animals, like suck either dog gone) and, at the bottom, romantic comedies.
the outlaws it’s certainly a B-list movie, and in that sense, it probably did what Netflix expected of it with 19.6 million CVEs during its opening weekend.
Since January, Netflix has been releasing a Top or A-tier list of American movies paired with a B-list movie or less, and by July, the A-tier movie will likely be They cloned Tyrone. In August it will be Heart of stone Etc.
So, well done. the outlawsyour job is done and you probably won’t be needed for a sequel.
2. Some international misses on the movie side.
Sometimes Netflix scores great with international movies; sometimes it doesn’t. Last week was a “no” week with the botched releases of the French heist movie. gold bricks (either “Money” in French. Well, not in French but in English in France, you get my drift) with just 3.4 million CVEs in its first four days, one of the worst releases for a European Thursday-released film in the last two years.

The same fate for the Philippine romantic comedy Seasons which managed to become the worst launch ever for a new Netflix Asian rom-com released on a Friday.
Finally, a quick review for through my window 2. It won’t replicate the success of the first movie which is still ranked #3 on the Top 10 Most Popular International Movies of All Time and will be lucky to only do half of what the first movie did. That’s a huge miss, and there’s a third movie coming out in 2024.
3. BAM! is released with a whisper (careless).
Critics and the public seem to like the new Netflix documentary about the famous pop band Pam! but it failed to resonate with a larger audience as the documentary launched with 4.4 million CVEs during its first 5 days, the worst opening ever for a documentary released on a Wednesday. Let’s see if the public wakes up before the documentary leaves the Top 10.
4. The Wizard weakens in its second week
With a relatively poor launch in week 1, things haven’t exactly picked up in week 2 with Season 3 of The Wizard now suffers a very steep drop since the launch of season 2.

Split release, quality, the fact that it released in the summer when the last season released in the winter… Name your choice as the likely explanation for why this is happening. Season 4 will need to be a soft reboot or it could very well be the final season.
5. The Lawyer Lincoln come back, same as always
Split pitch is too much for The Lawyer Lincoln, which returned for Season 2A last Thursday. His release was fairly good with 7.4M CVE, although he is not a blockbuster either.

When we compare it to the Season 1 release, we can see that so far it works exactly the same as the Season 1 release, which picked up in its second week.

Will it be the same here? My guess isn’t really as split releases don’t usually lead to a huge spike in week 2 as there are fewer episodes to watch but stay tuned for more next week!
